Alright, lets get on with it:

3 IDEAS FROM ME

I.

Tilly Norwood isn’t even close to ready. Neither is AI that can just build a movie on it’s own.

As fast as the technology is moving, AI still deeply struggles with maintaining consistency across scenes. The amount you have to generate and cull is absolutely enormous. You can provide the same prompt or description over and over, but every time it’s going to provide you with something slightly different.

The truth is, active choice and detail in creativity is incredibly important. The amount of individual choices (and their meaning) in one feature film or pilot is absolutely staggering.

You know the saying, ‘A picture is worth a thousand words?’ Turns out it’s pretty fucking accurate.

II.

I think there are a myriad of ways to use AI ethically without compromising your own art - it’s just a choice of what you truly value spending your time on.

I don’t think emails or social media (mine at least) count as art, so if using ChatGPT saves me time in these areas, I’m all for it. The time it saves that I can then put towards things I really care about, like time with clients or working on my own writing, is more than worth it for me.

I think those in the arts who are avoiding using AI AT ALL are denying themselves a valuable opportunity.

III.

I’m particularly worried about women and minorities NOT using AI.

As of right now, virtually 99% of all AI training data comes from white men of means - this translates to massive bias and blind spots, not through any fault of its own, but simply because it is not exposed to a diverse array of views.

It is imperative the biases inherent in AI be corrected earlier rather than later.

Increased usage by women and minorities may help improve these issues.

2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS

I.

From the late David Lynch in one of his last interviews before he died:

“I think it’s fantastic. I know a lot of people are afraid of it. I’m sure, like everything, they say it’ll be used for good or for bad. I think it’d be incredible as a tool for creativity and for machines to help creativity. The good side of it’s important for moving forward in a beautiful way. […] I’m sure with all these things, if money is the bottom line, there’d be a lot of sadness, and despair and horror. But I’m hoping better times are coming.”

II.

Brenda Ueland, American journalist and author of If You Want To Write:

“Why should we all use our creative power…? Because there is nothing that makes people so generous, joyful, lively, bold and compassionate, so indifferent to fighting and the accumulation of objects and money.”

1 QUESTION FOR YOU

What habit is holding you back the most? How can you drop it?

Until next week,
