What Keeps Me Going

Last week someone reached out in my Suggestions/Article Requests and asked: what keeps me going?

I’d love to do a longer post and give this topic the time it truly deserves, but for now I figure I’d give a boost to a TED talk I wish everyone in the film industry could see.

At the moment, we are at an existential crossroads in the entertainment industry. Over this past year I, myself, doubted whether screenwriting was truly worth pursuing anymore. Should I pivot to something more profitable? Something with a more secure future?

I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I do know that no matter what, A.I. is going to be absolutely terrible at writing characters outside of a typical white male perspective.

Why?

Because A.I. is only as good as the data it’s fed. And it’s nearly exclusively dined on data created by only one particular section of society.

It’s up to women/POC to create more than ever to close that data gap.

In a very real way, this is exactly what I experienced when I was an actress. It’s a MAJOR reason why I stepped over into writing.
