3 - 2 - 1 | Screenwriting Thursday
Woof - a lot has been happening, but I’m totally beat.

On with the show:
But First…
3 IDEAS FROM ME
I.
The business of show is forgetting that it relies on artists to make things truly novel and interesting.
A non-creative exec using AI isn’t going to be able to make the next big hit.
But an artist can use AI to do the work of a non-creative exec.
The business bros are losing sight of the fact that they are easier to replace than creatives.
Artists have more options than ever to get their work out there.
Don’t forget your own power and agency.
II.
Easy way to make the beginning of your script punchier:
Go through your script and highlight the 1st line of each character.
Is each first line/ moment of their introduction emblematic of who they are? How can you push this?
III.
When you’re coming up with ideas, strongly consider throwing away the first 5-10. Odds are those ideas are common - they’re what everyone else would come up with too.
Come up with 100 - 150 ideas. Once it’s getting hard you’ll know you’re in a good spot. You’ll hit a level where you’re churning out absolute shit ideas. Good. Keep going, push through - that’s how you build things that really surprise people.
2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS
I.
The late, great Catherine O'Hara:
“The older I get, the more I understand that laughter isn't about pretending that things are fine. It's about surviving the fact that they aren't."
II.
From David Fincher - one of my absolute favorite story tellers:
"The thing I always say to any writer that I'm working with is: Just make sure that in any argument, everyone is right. I want every single person arguing a righteous side of the argument. That makes interesting drama."
1 QUESTION FOR YOU
What opportunities are available in your life that you haven't been taking advantage of?
