3 - 2 - 1 | Screenwriting Thursday: Moving Forward
Hope you had a lovely long weekend!
Let’s get to it.
But First…
3 IDEAS FROM ME
I.
There are three distinct planes where forward motion can happen in a story:
The character's interior
The reader's experience (the audience knows something they didn’t before or they experience a new state of emotions)
The story world state
Hit any one plane, and the story is moving. Miss all 3, and there's no plane left on which the story is in motion.
II.
Well written stories do not exclusively come from a deep channeling of your gut or match your feelings on the particular day you’re working on them. Use your head - what makes sense as a solution even if you're not in love with it?
III.
On the flip side, maybe you have a solution that doesn't make intellectual sense but feels right in your gut. Pop it down and move forward. Maybe you'll find a way to make it make sense later. Maybe you won't. The point is forward momentum.
2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS
I.
If you’re ever worried that what you're writing has already been done, don’t. Just lean into it and make it your own. Per Andre Gide, French writer and literary critic:
"Everything that needs to be said has already been said. But since no one was listening, everything must be said again."
II.
Thank you Martin Luther King Jr., we could all use this reminder from time to time:
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; Only love can to that."
1 QUESTION FOR YOU
What little habits are draining you? How can you replace them with something the fuels you?
Until next week,
